Funding is needed to implement a formal apprenticeship program for aspiring midwives - to pay an educational stipend for students, a mentoring stipend, and to purchase educational materials. The proposed budget for this project is $10,000.
Funds are needed to allow North American midwives to spend extended periods of time working with ACAM to help them create an educational program that incorporates values and healing practices of the Mayan midwives as well as knowledge and skills demanded by the health challenges of life in the 21st century. These include HIV and AIDS, domestic violence, and pregnancy complications resulting from poverty, malnutrition, and ignorance. Revised, updated copies of Hesperian's Book for Midwives have been donated to the center.
Establishing a food pantry for pregnant women and children has been delayed because of lack of funds and because the midwives have felt the need to respond to more severe food shortages in the eastern part of the country. ACAM has also shared donated medicines with people in that area because children were dying from respiratory diseases and asthma. With more funding the food pantry will open in 2008.
The Council of Maya Mam People need lap top computers to facilitate communication between the many groups and organizations in the Mam area. Organization is needed in order to influence the new government to address problems critical to the lives of the Maya people.
Fun Fundraising
Selling Guatemalan weavings and crafts supports the Maya people and raises funds for the ACAM project. We are looking for solid help for this cause. If you are a member of a church, or civic group or school you could help us to organize a sale of weavings and handmade crafts and jewelry in your community.
Donations may also be made by PayPal.
